Adventures in Permaculture

How Dizzy Hot Nurse builds a Huglekultur.

Why build a huglekultur?  First, it's fun to say "hoogleculture".  Second, the log will decompose over time, adding nutrients to the hill.  Third, it's a great use of filthy straw covered in duck poo.  Fourth, after the log decomposes a bit, it'll essentially be a sponge, and the huglekultur will require much less water.  Fifth, it's a fun experiment!  Sixth, the decomposing log adds heat, which extends the growing season (and I'm also going to cover it to create a mini-greenhouse, so that's why I'm planting crops in early February).

So, this is how to build a huglekultur:

Step one:  get materials in a big pile

Step two:  realize you should have planned better.  Move all the smelly duck poo covered straw and put the log on the bottom.

Step three:  realize you don't know how to spell or pronounce "Huglekultur".

Step four:  put dirt over your layers of wood and duck poo covered straw.

Step five:  seeds!

Step six (one week after building): realize you don't remember which seeds went where and regret not using labels.

Step 7 (two weeks after building):  realize you have used about four times as many seeds as necessary, however be happy because things are growing!
